Aiming pitch shots

Aim pitch shot at top of flag

When faced with a short pitch that must be hit high and softly, most amateurs leave the shot short. When you’re focusing on sliding a lofted wedge under the ball to get it up quickly, most of the energy imparted by the club is used to shoot the ball upward, not forward. So it’s easy to leave the ball short of the hole. So, when visualizing short pitch shots, aim for the top of the flagstick. A shot that would hit the top of the flagstick would, of course, land the ball slightly past the hole. You don’t want this, but aiming for the top of the flagstick will offset the tendency to decelerate, leaving the shot short.
